Cycle route through the Wierdense Veld

Between Nijverdal and Wierden lies the Wierdense Veld: a mysterious and expansive nature reserve of about 420–440 hectares where living raised bog still exists. Something that is rare in the Netherlands. In the past, this peat was excavated on a large scale for turf. Afterwards, the area dried out due to ditches, drainage and acidification. But it is precisely this that created a special soil, rich biodiversity and a unique nature experience. Moist heathland alternates with dry heath and birch thickets. Sphagnum moss, cross-leaved heath, small cranberry and sundew are returning in places where restoration has been carried out. Birds such as the crane, common snipe and curlew breed here, and if you're lucky, you might even see snakes like the smooth snake. Everything revolves around nature restoration: the water level is being raised, rainwater is better retained, tree and shrub growth is reduced and the heath is grazed by sheep to counter grass encroachment. The efforts are beginning to show visible effects. Parts of the raised bog are wet again, special plants are returning, and the area exudes peace and space. A place to be still, to discover and to be surprised!
