Cycling route with war memories

The landscape between Arnhem and Rhenen is varied and peaceful, but at the same time bears the silent witnesses of a turbulent period in our history. During World War II, this was the setting of intense fighting, in which countless Dutch and allied soldiers lost their lives. As you cycle this route, you will be surrounded by nature that is both soothing and historically charged. Along this route, you will find several monuments, museums and historical buildings. Each of these places tells a unique story about courage, loss and liberation. For instance, you pass by the monumental building that housed the British headquarters and where you now find the Airborne Museum. You also pass the Deelen Airbase. Originally, the Germans had it built but after the war it was used by the Royal Air Force for a long time. It too now houses a museum where you can dive deeper into the history of World War II. Besides lots of information and museums, you can also visit the special monuments linked to the route. Monuments in the sign of Airborne and the Airborne Cemetery where 1750 Allied soldiers are buried, who did not survive the Battle of Arnhem. Pause to reflect on these special and poignant war memories during this cycle route.
