Cycle route through the trees and see the forest
Harderwijk, Ermelo, Hulshorst
Many visitors to the Veluwe literally cannot see the forest for the trees. The vast nature and beautiful forests naturally attract attention, but this time we are focusing on another facet of the region: art, culture and history. The Stadsmuseum Harderwijk and museum Het Pakhuis are definitely worth a visit thanks to their fascinating and changing exhibitions. The Noord-Veluws Museum in Nunspeet also shows how artists have captured the beauty of the Veluwe in their paintings. A special example of art from the past can be found in the Grote Kerk in Harderwijk. During restoration work, beautiful frescoes were discovered under a layer of whitewash dating from the time of the Iconoclastic Fury. These paintings offer a unique insight into the religious art of yesteryear. Those who are more interested in history can indulge themselves on this cycle route, which passes two castles – Staverden and De Essenburgh – and two characteristic windmills: De Hoop and De Maagd. For lovers of living art and culture, the route offers even more variety. The Kijktuinen (viewing gardens) in Nunspeet display a colourful combination of garden design, creativity and seasonal splendour. The sheepfold in Ermelo is also a unique experience, where traditional Veluwe life comes to life in harmony with nature and craftsmanship. The Veluwe therefore offers not only peace and nature, but also a rich variety of cultural and historical gems.
