Cycle route around the Veluwemeer to Elburg

In the past, Nunspeet wasn’t exactly a dream place to live: the Zuiderzee threatened from the north, while drifting sands crept in from the south. Around 1900, large-scale tree planting helped tame the sands. Later, when the Zuiderzee was reclaimed, things settled down. Nunspeet became an attractive place to live and relax – something you’ll feel clearly as you ride along the gently rippling shores of the Veluwemeer. The Noord-Veluws Museum in Nunspeet tells the story of how painters and locals experienced the Veluwe between 1880 and 1950. Elburg is a small fortress town that was once part of the Hanseatic League. From junction 30, you can make a short loop via junction 03 to visit the historic town centre. You’ll find restaurants, museums and unique shops. Be sure to visit the Grote or Saint Nicholas Church during a short walk through town. New on the route is Hanseatic city Harderwijk. This old port town lies right on the Wolderwijd and still breathes its maritime past. The historic city centre with its walls, squares and alleyways is lively and full of character. Time for a break? Harderwijk has plenty of cosy terraces, special cafés and cultural stops like the Stadsmuseum. A little north of Hierden, you can take a short detour to a bird hide with views over the Veluwemeer. Take your time – you might spot a kestrel, or if you’re lucky, a white-tailed eagle. Note: Between Biddinghuizen and Hulshorst (junctions 60 and 49), a cycle ferry operates. Check the ferry stop for current times. If the ferry isn’t running, you can detour via junctions 49-39-09-01-35-29-11 and rejoin the route from there (if coming from Biddinghuizen). From Nunspeet, head directly to junction 32 via junction 80.
