Cycle route The Land of Maas and Waal
Dodewaard, Druten, Ewijk
Dutch singer Boudewijn de Groot wrote an ode to this landscape in 1966 with the song: Het land van Maas en Waal. He lovingly writes about the differences in altitude in the area and the beautiful forests you encounter, the history and the fine people. A true love letter you could call it. As the title of the route suggests, you do both the Meuse and the Waal during this cycle route. You will pass through Dodewaard, which has appeared in documents since the 11th century. Like Druten and other villages along the Waal, they probably originated several centuries earlier. You cycle along beautiful floodplains, which give great views of the Meuse and a lot of greenery! To complete the route, you will of course also come across several interesting Pit stops along the way. For instance, you can stop at the Bloemenpark Appeltern, where you can visit over 20 hectares of beautiful gardens and flower beds. But there is also plenty of history to discover in the area. You can get off at Stoomgemaal Appeltern, popularly known as Stoomgemaal De Tuut. At the museum, you can dive into the pumping station's past and the important role it played in the region. Note! There are two ferries on the route that do not sail all year round. Check the sailing times at the Pit stop. If you cycle when the ferry does not sail, stay on the same side of the river via the following junctions: * At Ewijk: (99-82-) 83 (Winssen)-84-15-27-23-12 (Druten) and pick up the route again here richitng junction 12. * At Druten: 13-23-27-15-84-83 (Winssen) and pick up the route again here in the direction of junction 86. * At Dodewaard: (67-16-) 17-79-80 (Slijk-Ewijk) and pick up the route again here towards junction 39. * At Slijk-Ewijk: 80-79-17 (Dodewaard) and pick up the route again here towards junction 58.
