Hanseatic route Ommen
Ommen, Vroomshoop, Oud-Bergentheim
Ommen became a member of the Hanseatic League in 1473, mainly thanks to its cooperation with Zwolle and Deventer. Deventer in particular was an important partner for the town on the Vecht. Many goods were exported from Germany to Ommen via this river, including all the stones for the Royal Palace on Dam Square. There are no traces of the Hanseatic League in Ommen, although the sources of its wealth, the rivers Vecht and Regge, can of course still be admired. Because the Vecht was difficult to navigate in the summer due to the low water level, the ‘Zomp’ was the preferred vessel; a ship that had a lot of cargo space and not much draught due to its removable side boards. You can regularly see replicas of this ship sailing on the Regge. Would you like to board one of these Hanseatic ships? You can do so from Rijssen. Between junctions 65 and 64, you can cross the Vecht on a bicycle ferry. What if the ferry isn't running? Then you can cycle over the bridge between junctions 66 and 57.
