Cycle route from Hoorn to Medemblik

This cycling route through North Holland takes you to Hoorn. Whether the city was named after a Frisian king’s son, a tavern sign on the Roode Steen, or the horn-shaped early harbours – no one knows for sure. What is certain, is that Hoorn is a beautiful town full of rich history. Opperdoes also has a long history: it already existed in the 11th century. It’s often called the “Little Giethoorn” because of its many bridges and waterways. And of course, Opperdoes is famous for the Opperdoezer Ronde – a delicious, buttery potato. Medemblik is another town steeped in history. It was granted city rights in 1289 by Floris V, making it the oldest city in West Friesland. Once a bustling port, it’s now a popular destination for water sports enthusiasts. Behind the characteristic water tower of Hoogkarspel, archaeologists found remains of a farmhouse dating back to 1000 BC – and even parts of a burial mound that may be older still.
