Doesburg, Brummen, Zutphen
On this cycle route along the banks of the river IJssel, you will take a journey through history. Each of the villages and towns you cross has a story that goes back in time. Take for instance Doesburg, once the capital of the Richterambt of Doesburg. This prosperous town obtained city rights as early as 1237. Brummen's age is less well documented. Although Brummen has been inhabited for thousands of years, the name 'Brimnum' only appears in a charter from 794. Zutphen, too, has its roots in a Germanic settlement and experienced its heyday around 1300, when it was a prominent Hanseatic city. The city's numerous historical buildings bear witness to that rich history. Bronkhorst originated as a settlement near the former Bronckhorst castle and obtained city rights in 1482. Bronkhorst proudly calls itself the smallest town in the Netherlands, although three other towns make the same claim. Much of Bronkhorst has been designated a national conservation area. You can start your cycle route at the Pannekoekenbakker Doesburg, located between junctions 35, 09 and 01, where you will find ample parking and a lovely place to end your day with a tasty meal and refreshing drink.
