Zuiderpark - Den Haag

N 52.053537 / E 4.2885243

Zuiderpark is the perfect place for the residents of The Hague to relax. Construction of the park started in 1923. Yet it was not until 1936 that the park was officially opened. The park has many special attractions. These include a medieval duck decoy and the view hill De Villierskopje.

More fun features have since been added to the park. There is a skate park, a nature playground and a real western playground. There are also regular events, such as summer concerts in the open-air theatre.

Also special is the Arboretum Landen area. In this section, you will find 695 species of trees and shrubs from all kinds of countries all over the world. The arboretum was laid out around 1935 by Simon Doorenbos, who at the time received or brought back many plants, cuttings and seeds from his travels far away. You can now admire species from China, Japan, the Himalayan mountains, other Asia, northern Europe, southern Europe and North America. 41 species are very rare. Don't skip the Japanese horse chestnut, Chinese lime and the god pear, for instance.

Besides the Arboretum, you will also find a very varied flower and herb garden. You are allowed to pick herbs here. Or explore the works of art in the park, placed by Stroom Den Haag.

With so much to do, you'll understand why Zuiderpark is a popular spot. Moreover, you can end your day outdoors with a barbecue.
