Duivenvoorde was originally a 13th-century residential tower surrounded by a moat. The castle was thoroughly renovated in 1631 and 1717. Since then, it has served as a country estate where wealthy noble families could escape the city life in the summer months.
In 1960, the castle and the surrounding estate (260 hectares in total) were incorporated into a foundation. The castle, with authentic interiors from the 17th to 19th century, has been open to the public since then as a museum. Duivenvoorde is one of the oldest castles in South Holland and has a unique collection of family portraits, silver objects, Delft blue pottery and porcelain.
